Research Interest and Expertise

Adriana’s research interests lie at the intersections of Migration, Citizenship, Youth, Race and Ethnicity, and Latin America. More specifically, she explores questions around “The Other Side of Migration,” issues that are less explored in the dominant migration studies, like what happens when migrants return to their “home” country?  How does emigration impact rural communities with a strong culture of migration?  How can we work towards dismantling the double standards of who is labeled expats and digital nomads, and who is labeled migrants?

Her current work examines how young return migrants (re)integrate into different spheres of Mexican society and formulate their identity and sense of belonging across contexts of reception in the states of Oaxaca and Jalisco. Her previous work studied how young return migrants navigate their double Mexican-U.S. citizenship to negotiate a sense of belonging and better opportunities in Mexico, recently published in Social Problems.
