Academic Background

Adriana earned her B.A. in Anthropology and International Relations from UC Davis, where she overcame the challenges of being an ESL learner and first-generation college student. Her honors thesis and work as a research assistant sparked a strong interest in academic research. She went on to complete an M.A. in Latin American Studies at UC Berkeley, focusing on youth migration and return experiences in Mexico.

Though a Ph.D. once felt out of reach, mentorship throughout her academic journey encouraged her to pursue doctoral studies in Sociology at UC Berkeley, reflecting a continued commitment to research, mentorship, and migration studies.

About Adriana P. Ramírez

Adriana P. Ramirez is a scholar whose academic and professional journey is deeply rooted in her personal history of migration between Mexico and the United States. Born into a migrant family from the region of Los Altos de Jalisco, she spent her early years moving back and forth between Mexico and rural Northern California, living in migrant camps while her parents worked in the fields and navigating bilingual education. These formative experiences shaped her enduring interest in migration studies, particularly youth migration, and instilled a profound determination to pursue higher education.  Currently aspiring to earn a PhD in Sociology, Adriana aims to deepen her research in migration studies and become a tenured track professor who mentors and inspires future scholars, just as her mentors have done for her.

Adriana has also contributed to her community through political campaigns, advocacy organizations like the Youth Interfaith Immigrant Network, and mentoring first-generation students.  Her pastimes include dancing Ballet Folklorico, hiking, and spending time with family and friends.

Research Interest and Expertise

Adriana’s research interests lie at the intersections of Migration, Citizenship, Youth, Race and Ethnicity, and Latin America. More specifically, she explores questions around “The Other Side of Migration,” issues that are  less explored in the dominant migration studies, like what happens when migrants return to their “home” country?  How does emigration impact rural communities with a strong culture of migration?  How can we work towards dismantling the double standards of who is labeled expats and digital nomads, and who is labeled migrants?
